Williams recommends 12 months of support for new nurses
Nicole Williams, DNP, RN, CNOs provide 12 months of support for new nurses to ensure their practice readiness and reduce nurse turnover. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing director of content and test development cites her organization’s , which surveyed 200 nurses and found 74% said it takes 12 months for new nurses to practice autonomously. AONL member Williams maintains CNOs should define that period as entry level, offer transition-to-practice resources and periodically assess new nurses’ knowledge, skills and abilities to practice safely. Offering a hybrid curriculum, practice with a preceptor and assigning mentors and coaches can provide the support new nurses need to feel confident and thrive, Williams says.
