Study: COVID-19 in pregnancy linked to neurodevelopmental diagnoses in children

A study  a link between exposure to COVID-19 in utero and a higher risk of neurodevelopment diagnosis among children by age 3 years. Published in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the retrospective cohort  found that among more than 800 children exposed to maternal COVID infection during pregnancy, 16.3% had a neurodevelopmental diagnosis by age 3 compared with 9.7% of unexposed children. Nearly 66% of maternal COVID infections took place during the third trimester. The authors hypothesize the association may be caused by a common pathway of maternal immune activation. The researchers used electronic health record data for births at two academic medical centers and six community hospitals from March 2020 through May 2021 when pregnant women were mostly unvaccinated.
