Hospitals hire more nurse scientists

Hospitals and health systems increasingly are  nurse scientists, who traditionally have worked in academia, according to Bevin Cohen, PhD, RN, director of the Center for Nursing Research and Innovation at New York City-based Mount Sinai. Cohen attributes the shift to Magnet designation, which emphasizes research conducted by nurses. In addition to leading original research, nurse scientists support nurses’ professional growth and make hospitals more attractive employers for nurses interested in research and advanced education, improving nurse retention and engagement. Nurse scientists also improve patient care by designing studies to determine how to improve patient satisfaction, cost and quality. As research becomes more collaborative, nurse scientists add perspectives to enhance research quality and applicability. (Becker’s Hospital Review , 7/25/25)
