Column calls for language changes describing nurse manager duties

A November Journal of Nursing Administration column  for health care leaders to use “span of accountability” to describe the myriad duties nurse managers engage in. The term would replace “span of control” ─ an industrial term narrowly focused on the number of staff a manager oversees that does not consider the indirect influence, collaboration and strategic accountability that are part of effective nurse managers’ roles. The authors, co-chairs of the AONL Workforce Subcommittee on Nursing Value and Impact, say span of accountability incorporates the “range of outcomes, responsibilities and metrics that a leader is accountable for, regardless of direct reporting lines” and acknowledges success is defined “by the breadth of responsibilities, from safety scores and staffing metrics to team culture and quality improvement efforts.”
