Research with the Nursing Value Workgroup has worked on the concept of using electronic medical record data to determine the cost of nursing care over the past five years. Understanding the cost of nursing care is tedious but can be teased out using key data available today. A collaborative observational, retrospective, longitudinal study from nursing leaders reveals a new opportunity to determine the cost of nursing care. Learn how the data was gathered and evaluated to focus on the acuity and nurse experience as factors associated with care hours.

Gain insights on interpreting how demand hours reflect acuity and costs. Data from the electronic medical record (EMR) to capture acuity and demand hours for care, human resource data and a nurse-patient assignment tool provides insights to the cost of nursing care useful for nursing leaders.
