Over the past five years, incidents of violence against health care workers have skyrocketed, as incivility and violent acts in our society spill into hospitals. Violence in health care has implications far beyond the injuries sustained by its workforce. Workplace violence creates a difficult environment for nurses to care for patients. Health care workers cannot provide attentive care when they are afraid for their personal safety, distracted by disruptive patients or family members, or traumatized from prior attacks.

Protecting our health care workers must be a national priority. Hospitals and health systems have bolstered security measures, training programs and policies to ensure the safety of health care workers and patients. According to a new American Hospital Association report, prepared by the University of Washington Harborview Injury and Prevention Research Center, the financial cost of violence to hospitals in 2023 was estimated at $18.27 billion. These costs include health care treatment for victims, security staffing for health care facilities and violence prevention programs/training, among other costs. Despite prevention efforts, health care and social service workers are five times more likely than any other type of worker to be physically attacked on the job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. No one should have to fear for their safety while at work, especially when their job is saving lives and caring for patients.

Despite the proliferation of workplace violence and its effect on our health care system, health care workers do not experience the same federal protections as aircraft and airport workers. Passage of the Save Healthcare Workers Act would serve as a significant deterrent to violence in hospitals and a crucial step in protecting health care workers' safety.

AONL Position

AONL advocates for the Save Healthcare Workers Act (S.1600/H.R.3178) to provide federal protection for health care workers against violence and intimidation.

Key Resources

Save Health Care Workers Act Information Sheet (PDF)

Letter to Representatives Supporting the Save Health Care Workers Act (PDF)

Workplace Violence Prevention Resources

Workplace Safety Advocacy & Public Policy
-->

Sun, 11 Jan 2026 17:59:43 -0600 Workplace Safety Using Innovative Strategies to Combat Workplace Violence /nursing-leadership-podcast/using-innovative-strategies-to-combat-workplace-violence Wed, 09 Feb 2022 13:22:59 -0600 Workplace Safety When the Customer Is Not Always Right /nursing-leadership-podcast/when-the-customer-is-not-always-right Fri, 09 Apr 2021 07:38:27 -0500 Workplace Safety Guiding Principles for Protect Patients from Reckless Behavior by Registered Nurses /resource-library/guiding-principles-protect-patients-reckless-behavior-registered-nurses Tue, 23 Apr 2019 19:28:41 -0500 Workplace Safety Role of the nurse leader in crisis management /role-nurse-leader-crisis-management
Communicating internally and externally is one of the most difficult, yet critical, responsibilities leaders face. As our nation learned during Hurricane Sandy, the Boston Marathon bombing, the Ebola outbreak in Africa and other major crises, frequent communication and full disclosure is essential to maintaining credibility with the organization’s interprofessional team and the public. What is said (or not said) can be as important one’s actions.
Mon, 22 Apr 2019 10:30:53 -0500 Workplace Safety
